MEET YOUR EANES EDUCATION

PROFESSIONAL, Lane Grigg!

AP HUMAN GEOGRAPHY, ASST. BOYS GOLF COACH, ASST. GIRLS TRACK COACH

BY ALISON BOGLE

Lane Grigg has been teaching at Westlake High School for so long that even he can’t remember how many years it has been! “This is my 24th or 25th year at Westlake. Teaching and coaching is the only career I’ve ever had,” he said.

Lane teaches AP Human Geography and is also the assistant boys golf coach, as well as the assistant girls track coach. The drive to help students learn and grow is what led Lane to teaching. “Every teacher and coach has one goal – to help kids get better. There is nothing better than helping a kid be successful,” said Lane.

Not only has Lane dedicated his career to Eanes ISD, but he is a product of the Eanes system as well. “I’m a big believer in Eanes ISD. I moved to Westlake when I was 8 years old, and I was on the front of the population boom out here. I attended Valley View Elementary, Forest Trail Elementary, Hill Country Middle School, West Ridge Middle School, and Westlake High School. Every few years, they opened a new school, and I was always zoned to the new building,” shared Lane.

“The community is very supportive of all aspects of public schools. The administrators support us, trust us to do our job, and aren’t micromanagers.

The teachers here are professional, are always ready to lend a hand, and we look out for each other. It’s a great place to work,” continued Lane.

Lane also receives support and encouragement from his wife, Anne.

“Twenty-two years ago, I tricked a young lady named Anne into marrying a coach and she’s been putting up with me ever since,” laughed Lane. Their son, Richard, is a junior at Westlake and their daughter, Lizzie, is in 8th grade at West Ridge. “Richard and Lizzie will be hitting the job market in about 10 years, so if you’re reading this, please give them a job when the time comes!” joked Lane.

When asked what he wished his fellow Lost Creekers understood about teaching, Lane shared, “It’s disheartening to see public education become a political issue. It’s a major reason young people aren’t going into the field. College graduates can certainly find a more attractive way to make $55,000! Teachers aren’t trying to brainwash or indoctrinate kids – the State of Texas provides teachers with teaching curriculum and guidelines called TEKS and we follow them.”

Lane went on to suggest ways that the community can support him in his role. “Support public education!

Keep passing bonds, donating to the Eanes Education Foundation (BEF), volunteering at schools, and things like that. I can’t say enough how much passing bonds and EEF donations help the district! Property tax recapture makes Eanes send so much money away that it’s mind boggling, and if the school voucher stuff gets passed it will only be worse.”

Lane concluded our interview with his philosophy in life, “If you’ve been around Eanes long enough, you’ll remember the one-of-a-kind Westlake High School counselor, Toody Bird.

Toody Bird had a quote she liked that went, ‘I usually find what I’m looking for.’ It’s probably my favorite quote.

Look for the good and you’ll find the good. Look for the bad and you’ll find the bad. I find I’m a better, happier person when I look for the good.” Wise words indeed…

“SUPPORT PUBLIC EDUCATION! KEEP PASSING BONDS, DONATING TO THE EANES EDUCATION FOUNDATION (EEF), VOLUNTEERING AT SCHOOLS, AND THINGS LIKE THAT. I CAN’T SAY ENOUGH HOW MUCH PASSING BONDS AND EEF DONATIONS HELP THE DISTRICT!”
